Know your RV’s loaded weight
RV dry weights leave out the things that make a camper usable: water, propane, batteries, food and gear. Fresh water alone weighs 8.34 lb per gallon, so a full tank can add several hundred pounds.
Add liquids and cargo to the dry weight to compare against the RV’s GVWR. On a fifth wheel, much of that weight lands on the truck as pin weight, so check payload too. Then make sure the tires can carry the result.
Towing a tall RV also cuts fuel economy sharply. Use the fuel cost calculator to budget the trip.
Which RV calculator do I need?
Start with the RV cargo carrying capacity calculator, which uses the numbers on your RV’s weight label to show how much gear you can add. The RV water and propane calculator adds up the weight of every tank, so you can decide what to carry full and what to fill at camp.
For towables, the fifth wheel pin weight and weight distribution calculators show what the RV does to the tow vehicle. For the trip itself, the fuel cost, range and travel time calculators use towing numbers rather than the figures you get driving solo.
Where RV weight hides
Water is the big one: a full fresh tank of 40 gallons weighs over 330 pounds. Batteries, a second spare, bikes, outdoor furniture, cast-iron cookware and canned food add up quickly. Dealer-installed options are usually not included in the factory weight on the label.
Weighing the loaded RV once, axle by axle, shows where the weight is and whether one side or axle is carrying more than its share.
